We all have skeletons. And ghosts of campaigns past.
Here are a few that hover over the tattered portfolio case in my attic.
And one that still haunts the Advertising Hall of Fame.
April 2022, Lizzo and SNL fan-fictioned him. Before that, Robot Chicken claymated him. Family Guy blamed him for Peter's death. Jim name dropped him on The Office. And when Lorne Michaels told Amy Poehler "You can do the guy from Six Flags” she said, quote, "Fuck yeah."
Mr. Six broke the internet before there was an internet.
I helped create the campaign and pitch/win the biz. I was also ACD/writer on the work until the day Dan Snyder bought Six Flags, fired us, and very publicly killed off the character.
Within months, due to public outcry, Mr. Six was back. Vox populi.
Once Upon A Time, there was a place called Blockbuster...
Lest we not forget, Blockbuster was once the second most recognized brand in the world. And during that glorious yesteryear, I was their global creative director.
Among other things, I was responsible for the 'Ray and Carl' campaign. I wrote the spots, oversaw the animation and directed the VO talent, which included a who’s who of Hollywood B-listers, including James Woods, Jim Belushi, Alec Baldwin, Carnie Wilson, Bobcat Goldthwait and Albert Brooks. At the time, it was the biggest commercial production in the world. The celebrity trailer costs alone were in the millions.
"Mouse Click" was Super Bowl XLIII's number one-rated spot, the campaign won lots of Gold Clios and the plush toys still fetch $29.97 on eBay, even in 'fair' condition.
And no, I wasn’t responsible for the fall of Blockbuster. Blame Carl Icahn for that little oopsie.
They adorn the walls of the Advertising Hall of Fame. Millions own the plushy versions.
I wrote for the campaign. And occasionally played a sheep on TV ("and my neck hurts!")
After a multi-year hiatus and new ad agency, Serta brought the flock back. Proving you can't deny the power of an iconic spokesthing, no matter how much you want to.
Wireless printers. Because... grandma.
* It's an older spot, but still makes me giggle.
